Margao – In the wake of a tragic road accident that claimed the life of a young rider from Navelim at Seraulim, South Goa District Collector Asvin Chandru has issued a directive to the Public Works Department (PWD) to install rumbler sticks in the identified accident-prone area within 30 days.

This decision came during a meeting of the South Goa Road and Traffic Safety Committee, chaired by Collector Chandru, where the PWD faced criticism for failing to adhere to a previous notification. GOACAN Secretary Lorna Fernandes drew attention to the PWD’s non-compliance with an August 2023 notification that mandated the installation of rumbler sticks at Seraulim to enhance road safety.

Despite the clear instructions in the notification, which included the possibility of action under Section 188 of the IPC for non-compliance, the PWD had not implemented the safety measures. “We had insisted on penal action against the PWD for non-compliance with the notification on rumbler sticks, but there was no response from the authorities,” Fernandes stated during the meeting.

Collector Chandru emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the recent fatality and the need for immediate measures to prevent further accidents. The committee not only focused on the installation of rumbler sticks but also discussed a range of traffic safety issues, including the installation of speed breakers on approach roads to highways.

Additionally, it was decided that the police would take action against road rollers that impede traffic flow on highways and major roads. These steps are part of a broader effort to enhance road safety and ensure compliance with existing traffic regulations in South Goa.
