Panaji: A delegation from Kala Rakhan Mandd met Kala Academy Member Secretary Shankar Gaonkar today, demanding transparency, improved infrastructure, and accountability in the functioning of the state’s premier cultural institution.

The delegation, led by Convenor Devidas Amonkar, included artists and cultural activists Cecille Rodrigues, Dnyanesh Moghe, Francis Coelho, Sai Palondikar, Damodar Kamat, Dilip Prabhudessai, and Harshada Kerkar Sonak. They raised concerns over alleged corruption in the recent renovation works, poor maintenance of infrastructure, and lack of transparency in the Academy’s administration.

The members stressed that Kala Academy has deviated from its original vision of being a hub for Goan art and culture, and is now suffering from neglect and administrative lapses. They demanded an independent audit and inquiry into renovation expenditures and tender processes to restore public trust.

Kala Rakhan Mandd also called for the release of an Annual Calendar of Activities at the start of each year to ensure better planning and participation by local artists. They criticized the administration for failing to appropriately celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Konkani Drama Competition, calling it a reflection of the Academy’s indifference towards Goan theatre and performing arts.

Responding to the concerns, Member Secretary Shankar Gaonkar assured the delegation that the issues raised would be addressed on priority, with a focus on improving infrastructure, transparency, and cultural engagement.
