Panaji: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant chaired the 17th Board Meeting of the Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) in the presence of Waste Management Minister Atanasio Monserrate and other board members, where several crucial decisions were taken to enhance Goa’s waste management infrastructure.
The meeting approved the empanelment of additional door-to-door waste collection agencies and Project Management Consultants (PMCs) to improve waste collection efficiency across the state. An MoU will also be signed with the Directorate of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (DSDE) and the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) to introduce a Waste Management Technician course and establish a Centre of Excellence for training Urban Local Bodies (ULBs).
As part of the new initiatives, five-way waste segregation will be implemented in educational institutions, while sanitary waste incinerators and dispensers will be installed in all government offices. The Board also approved the removal of legacy hazardous waste from Sunrise Zinc in Cuncolim to an authorised facility in Pissurlem.
Wet-waste collection vehicles for Saligao and Taleigao will be procured with funding support from GIZ. The government also plans to promote decentralized biomethanation (Compressed Bio-Gas) projects through the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Additionally, the SINTEF (Norway) project for construction and demolition (C&D) waste management will be extended.
A pilot project for PET bottle recycling will be undertaken in collaboration with the Village Recyclers Foundation, aimed at empowering women Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant reaffirmed the government’s commitment to building a cleaner, greener, and more sustainable Goa through comprehensive waste management reforms.
