Psychologist Stresses Need for Mental Health Support After Student Suicides

After BITS Pilani Tragedy, Psychologist Ribea Golapalle Calls for Stronger Mental Health Support

Reacting to the recent incident of student deaths at BITS Pilani, psychologist Ribea Golapalle said that suicides among students are rarely caused by a single reason, but often by a combination of factors. These include academic pressure, family expectations, relationship struggles, bullying, and feelings of isolation. Underlying mental health conditions such as anxiety or depression can make it even harder for young people to cope, she added.

Golapalle pointed out that there are warning signs that must not be ignored — withdrawal from friends, sudden mood changes, expressions of hopelessness, or remarks about life not being worth living. “These are signals that a student may be in distress and needs immediate support,” she said.

She stressed the importance of creating safe spaces where students can talk openly without fear of judgment. Schools and colleges, she said, should strengthen counseling services and build awareness around mental health. Parents and peers also have a vital role to play by listening with empathy and offering support.

“With timely help and compassionate care, suicidal thoughts can be addressed and young lives can be saved,” Golapalle emphasized.
