MLA Venzy Viegas Slams Goa Government Over Taxi Subsidy Controversy

Panaji, Goa: MLA Capt. Venzy Viegas has strongly criticized the BJP-led Goa Government for allegedly favoring a private taxi company through a controversial subsidy scheme, which he claims is detrimental to local taxi businesses. In a scathing statement, Viegas accused the government of “looting” local taxi operators by subsidizing a private entity, raising questions about the transparency and intent behind the initiative.

The controversy stems from a recent government-backed program promoting the “GoaMiles” taxi service, which offers up to 30% discounted rates and zero surge charges as part of a pre-booking campaign. While marketed as a public-friendly initiative, Viegas has labeled it a “bluff,” arguing that it unfairly disadvantages local taxi operators who rely on fair market competition.

“Instead of supporting our local taxi businesses, the government is handing over public funds to a private company, jeopardizing the livelihoods of countless Goan families,” Viegas said. He has called for an immediate investigation into the subsidy allocation and urged the government to clarify its motives.
The MLA has demanded a detailed report on the financial implications of the scheme and its impact on the local taxi industry, vowing to raise the issue in the upcoming assembly session. Local taxi operators have expressed solidarity with Viegas, staging protests to highlight their concerns over the government’s decision.
