Porvorim 29th July 2025: During the Calling Attention Motion in the Goa Legislative Assembly, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar voiced serious concerns about the growing number of Goan youths falling victim to fraudulent overseas job recruitment agencies. Amonkar highlighted that many Goans, driven by unemployment, rising living costs, and the lure of better living standards abroad, are being misled by unverified agents who promise high-paying jobs with visa and accommodation support.

In a shocking revelation, Amonkar shared several cases of Goans being duped and later deported after illegal entry attempts into countries like the U.S., Mexico, Canada, and Cambodia. He cited examples of individuals from Sarzora, Verna, Quepem, Shiroda, and his own constituency who were deported after facing jail time and harsh living conditions in immigration camps abroad.

One such victim, Shri Siddappa Kelura from Mormugao, spent 9 months behind bars in the U.S. after being misled by an agent from Porvorim. Despite paying nearly ₹16 lakh, he was forced to take a dangerous route via Mexico and ended up in detention without basic facilities. Similar harrowing accounts were shared of other victims like Shri Mallikarjun Chalwadi and Shri Ravi Chalwadi, who were also promised legitimate employment but ended up in detention camps after illegal border crossings.

Amonkar urged the Goa Government to conduct a thorough review of all recruitment agencies operating in the state, verify their credentials, and enforce strict licensing and ethical standards. He also called for the establishment of a grievance redressal mechanism to support victims and prevent further exploitation.

He stressed that it is the duty of the government to ensure that Goans seeking employment abroad are protected from such fraudulent practices and that all overseas job opportunities must be legitimate and safe.
