Panaji: Goa MLA Viresh Borkar has raised serious concerns over the escalating unemployment rate in the state. According to data from the Centre for Monitoring Indian Economy (CMIE), Goa’s unemployment rate has fluctuated significantly over the past year, peaking at 15.5% in April 2023. This is in stark contrast to the national average of 3.17%, highlighting the gravity of the situation in Goa.
Addressing the issue, Borkar criticized the current Employment Exchange Act, which places no obligation on employers to recruit through the employment exchange. He emphasized the need for urgent amendments to the Act to prioritize Goan youth for employment in the private sector.
“It is unacceptable that while our youth are struggling to find jobs, the current system fails to provide them with adequate opportunities,” Borkar stated. “The Employment Exchange should be a robust platform to connect job seekers with employers, but unfortunately, it is not fulfilling its purpose.”
The MLA demanded that the government take immediate steps to amend the Employment Exchange Act and implement measures to ensure that Goan youth are given priority in the private sector. He also called for the creation of more employment opportunities through skill development programs and industrial promotion.
Borkar’s statement has sparked a wider debate on the state of employment in Goa and the effectiveness of existing job placement mechanisms. As the issue gains traction, pressure mounts on the government to address the growing unemployment crisis and create a more conducive environment for job creation.
