Margao: As part of the Goa Statehood Day celebrations commemorating 60 years of the historic Goa Opinion Poll (Janmat Kaul), Madganvcho Awaaz & Youth Leader Prabhav Naik paid tribute to four distinguished personalities whose contributions played a significant role in preserving Goa’s unique identity, culture and heritage.
Prabhav Naik honoured the memory of Opinion Poll stalwart Dr. Jack de Sequeira, widely regarded as the architect of the historic Janmat Kaul. A memento was presented to his daughter, Bai Manuela Maria de Sequeira, in recognition of Dr. Sequeira’s visionary leadership and pioneering role in safeguarding Goa’s identity during one of the most defining moments in the State’s history.
The contribution of Bab Shabudad Dessai was also remembered with gratitude. A memento was presented to his son, Vishal Dessai, acknowledging the immense impact of the iconic Jyot Yatra, which became a symbol of public awakening and mobilization during the Opinion Poll movement and continues to inspire generations of Goans.
Prabhav Naik also honoured the memory of Goem Shaahir Bab Ulhas Buyao, whose powerful songs became the voice of the Janmat Kaul movement. A memento was presented to his wife, Bai Neela Buyao, in recognition of his invaluable contribution through music, which helped strengthen public resolve and remains deeply etched in Goa’s collective memory.
The occasion also paid tribute to Goa’s beloved son and internationally acclaimed cartoonist Bab Mario de Miranda on his birth centenary year. A memento was presented to his sister, Bai Fatima Miranda Figueiredo, in recognition of his extraordinary contribution to art, culture and the global recognition of Goa through his timeless illustrations and creative genius.
Speaking on the occasion, Prabhav Naik stated that Madganvcho Awaaz is observing “Asmitai Vars” to mark 60 years of the historic Opinion Poll and to celebrate the spirit of Goa’s identity, which was preserved through the sacrifices and efforts of countless Goans. He said that honouring these distinguished personalities and their families was a small gesture of gratitude towards those who played a vital role in shaping Goa’s destiny, while inspiring future generations to cherish and protect the State’s unique heritage and distinct identity.
