Margao – Once upon a time, Kala Academy was renovated for IFFI, which tragically turned it into a Monument of Corruption. God save Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, stated Vishal Pai Cacode, Artist & Former Governing Body Member of ESG
Reacting to the annoucement made by Ravindra Bhavan, Margao Chairman Rajendra Talak of closure of main auditorium for International Film Festival of India(IFFI) related works, Vishal Pai Cacode questioned if the Pai Tiatrist auditorium will be converted into film theatre and what impact will it have on acoustics and layout of the present auditorium.
Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, a vital cultural institution for Salcete will be shut for two months for IFFI-related renovation works. This is despite the fact that crores of rupees have already been spent on repairs and renovations over the past five years. It raises serious doubts about the intent behind these repeated works and whether the Ravindra Bhavan is being systematically altered for purposes beyond its original mandate, stated Vishal Pai Cacode.
Ravindra Bhavan was purposefully designed to host dramas, dance, music, and cultural performances. Are we now seeing an attempt to convert it into a film theatre? If so, what is the guarantee that it will not meet the same fate as Kala Academy – compromised acoustics, flawed layouts, and loss of cultural integrity? Transparency is the need of the hour. Who is the consultant behind this work? What is the cost? Who is the contractor? The public has a right to know, and this information must be made public, demanded Vishal Pai Cacode.
While huge sums are spent on repairs, the annex building lies underutilized. Why has Ravindra Bhavan not taken initiative to start regular music, dance, and theatre classes for local children and youths? Moreover, why are nearly 60 percent of program funds going to non-Goan artists, when the Bhavan’s primary role is to nurture local talent? Even more troubling is the preferential treatment given to one institution closely linked to the Chairman, with massive grants being sanctioned, while other institutions in Margao are ignored, charged Vishal Pai Cacode.
Equally concerning is the composition of the Executive Committee. Ravindra Bhavan was established for the people and artists of Salcete, but most members are from Margao and Fatorda. Appointments appear politically motivated, with individuals having no background in art or culture occupying key decision-making positions on executive committee. This undermines the institution’s credibility and defeats its cultural purpose, said Vishal Pai Cacode.
The people of Salcete deserve answers. We demand complete transparency in the current renovation process and a commitment to protect the original layout and purpose of Ravindra Bhavan. Let it remain a home for Goan art and culture not another casualty of politics and misplaced priorities, Vishal Pai Cacode said.
