Panaji: In a resounding display of unity and determination, leaders representing the Scheduled Tribes (ST) community across Goa have galvanized support behind candidates affiliated with the I.N.D.I.A Alliance for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. This decisive move underscores the deep-seated frustration and sense of betrayal felt by the ST populace towards the ruling BJP government, amidst a protracted struggle for equitable political representation and redressal of longstanding grievances.
For the past two decades, the ST community in Goa has tirelessly advocated for their constitutional rights, particularly seeking political reservations to address the myriad challenges afflicting their communities. These challenges range from the underutilization of allocated Tribal Funds, substantial job vacancies remaining unfilled, pending tenancy cases, to the pervasive absence of basic infrastructure and amenities in tribal areas, including reliable roads, access to potable water, and electricity connectivity.
The recent introduction of the “Readjustment of Representation of Scheduled Tribes Bill 2024” by the State and Central BJP Government has elicited widespread discontent and disillusionment within the ST community. Viewed as a thinly veiled electoral maneuver, this legislative initiative diverges markedly from the community’s steadfast demand for direct reservation of seats in the legislative assembly, further exacerbating existing grievances and intensifying calls for substantive political reform.
In response to what is perceived as a betrayal of trust and a blatant disregard for their aspirations, ST leaders have rallied behind the I.N.D.I.A Alliance, a coalition comprising various opposition parties united in their commitment to upholding democratic principles and safeguarding the rights of marginalized communities. This alliance includes stalwarts such as the Aam Aadmi Party, Goa Forward Party, and Trinamool Congress, among others, each pledging to address the concerns of the ST community comprehensively and expeditiously upon assuming power.
Central to the ST community’s decision to align with the I.N.D.I.A Alliance is the unequivocal assurance provided by the All India Congress Party leadership, promising the implementation of political reservations within a year of assuming office. This pledge, complemented by the party’s overarching commitment to expeditiously resolve pending forest rights claims, allocate Tribal Sub Plan Funds equitably, and address the backlog of vacancies earmarked for SC, ST, and OBC candidates, has resonated deeply with the aspirations and aspirations of the ST populace.
