The Imagine Panaji Smart City Development Limited, in collaboration with the Goa State Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited, has initiated the restoration and protection of the Mandovi River coastline. Part 1 of the project, the Promenade from the Pedestrian Arch Bridge near ESG to Children Park, was recently unveiled and has been themed as “Tapaloka” Yog Kshetra (Yoga Realm). The aim of this project is to create a serene and engaging space that promotes well-being, education, and the practice of yoga for individuals and the community.
The Promenade boasts several distinct features, including:
1) Sinha Dwar (Lion Gate): The entrance is marked by two magnificent Kadamba lion sculptures, symbolizing strength and guardianship.
2) Yog Setu (Bridge): A unique bridge serves as the entrance and connection to the promenade from DB Road near ESG to Miramar Beach. The bridge spans over the Santa Inez creek branch and showcases Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) poses on its arches. Additionally, Yog Purush and Purna Yogi statues are placed beneath the main arches.
3) Yog Stambh (Pillar): Located after the bridge, a beautifully carved granite pillar represents the concept of “One Sun, One World, One Grid,” symbolizing the unity and harmony of humanity.
4) Yog Dalan: A gallery situated in the square adjacent to the bridge provides an interactive exhibition on the neurophysical and metaphysical aspects of yoga. It features a pergola structure and displays yoga positions corresponding to the chakras in the body.
5) Yog Mandal: An intimate amphitheater designed for small performances and interactive yoga sessions for locals.
6) Yog Path: A pathway adorned with twelve granite sculptures depicting different yoga asanas (poses).
7) Pranayam Kshetra: An area by the river called Pranayam Kshetra offers a serene environment for the practice of pranayama (breathing exercises).
8) Astang Yog Kshetra: Within a serene spot surrounded by trees and gentle sea breeze, a spacious plaza in the shape of an octagon symbolizes the eight aspects of Astang Yog (Eight Limbs of Yoga). The plaza serves as an ideal setting for individuals to engage in yoga practices and experience peace and harmony in nature.
9) “Gomantbhumi Janak Parshuram” Statue: A 20-foot statue of “Gomantbhumi Janak Parshuram” stands on a finger-like projection extending into the river. Parshuram, considered an immortal in Hindu mythology, is credited with creating the Konkan coast. The statue represents the eternal essence of yoga and its union of body, mind, and soul. This statue of Bhagwan Parashuram stands as a symbol of the everlasting essence of Yoga and pays homage to the creator of Gomantak Bhoomi.
Together, these features create an inviting space where individuals and the community can immerse themselves in the practice and teachings of yoga while enjoying the beauty of the surroundings. The project aims to enhance the cultural and spiritual heritage of Goa, promoting well-being and non-motorized mobility in line with the Smart City scheme.
