Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao stated on Sunday that the recent incidents of police involvement in crimes and firing gunshots at the public suggest that police stations have turned into ‘Gunda Gangs’.
Reacting to the arrest of two IRB police personnel in the Poraskade gunfire case, Alemao said it is a shame that police are getting involved in criminal activities.
“Failed to keep policemen under control, the Goa BJP Govt has turned police stations into ‘Gunda Gangs’. This is why policemen are getting involved in crimes, extortion, and cocaine (drugs). How can one differentiate between a genuine police officer and a gunda/gangster at police stations? Police personnel have contributed to the collapse of law and order,” Alemao said.
He added that police are helping criminals escape from custody and robbers to loot people. “Do such criminal-minded police officers have any right to be in the service, which is meant to protect the public?” he questioned.
Alemao emphasized that law and order in the state have collapsed, with police taking the law into their own hands and assaulting people in custody.
“Recently, there was a brutal custodial assault on Edberg Pereira from Navelim, who is fighting for his life at the Goa Medical College. If such a police system continues, innocent people will never get justice,” Alemao said.
