Minister Subhash Phal Dessai, Goa’s Social Welfare Minister, highlighted during an educational event in Ponda, South Goa, that proficiency in language, particularly English, should not be equated with intelligence or performance. He challenged the misconception that speaking English fluently automatically makes students experts and urged parents to recognize and nurture their children’s unique talents instead.
Minister Phal Dessai pointed out that intelligence is not bound to any specific language and advocated for instilling values and cultural principles (“Sanskars”) in children. He encouraged parents to identify their children’s talents and support their development in those areas, rather than solely focusing on language proficiency.
Reflecting on his own educational journey, the minister recalled starting his primary education in Marathi and gradually incorporating English into the curriculum later on. He acknowledged the initial challenges of learning English but emphasized the importance of a holistic approach to education, beyond language acquisition.
In conclusion, Minister Phal Dessai advised parents against pressuring their children to enroll in prestigious schools solely for English proficiency. He stressed the need for a well-rounded education that includes not only academics but also the development of various skills and talents.
