26 January 2026: Town and Country Planning (TCP) Minister Vishwajit Rane has categorically stated that no development will be permitted within a 150-metre radius of Bondvalli Lake, even in areas where settlement permissions already exist. The assurance comes following a detailed discussion with Fr Richard Pinheiro, Parish Priest of Santa Cruz, and after reviewing concerns raised by local residents regarding ongoing and proposed development around the lake.
In an official statement, Rane clarified that the properties in question, along with others surrounding the lake, were converted under the Regional Plan 2021 during the tenure of the previous Congress government. He added that large-scale plotting approvals were also granted during that period.
After considering the issues highlighted by Fr Richard Pinheiro and the sentiments of people residing in the peripheral areas, the TCP Minister said he has taken a firm decision to ensure the protection of Bondvalli Lake. “No development permission will be granted within a 150-metre radius of the lake, even if settlement permissions exist,” he stated.
Rane further подчеркed that no additional or higher Floor Space Index (FSI) will be allowed, despite the permissible limit being 80. Clear directions have been issued to the concerned authorities, and any higher FSI granted in violation of these instructions will be cancelled by the Board.
Reaffirming his commitment to the people of Santa Cruz, the TCP Minister said that no development will be allowed that compromises or endangers Bondvalli Lake, stressing that environmental protection remains a priority for the government.
