During the monsoon session of the Eighth Legislative Assembly, Mormugao MLA Sankalp Amonkar introduced a private member resolution highlighting the urgent need for regulating lifts and escalators in Goa. Amonkar emphasized the increasing use of these systems in both residential and commercial buildings, as well as during the construction phase, and noted the lack of oversight from any government department.
Amonkar proposed that the Directorate of Fire and Emergency Services be designated as the nodal agency responsible for overseeing these regulations. He outlined the need for mandatory regular inspections, compliance with national and international safety standards, and clear emergency protocols to ensure the safety and reliability of lifts and escalators. Additionally, he suggested training programs for technicians and building managers, and public awareness campaigns on safe usage.
Amonkar stressed that these measures would enhance public safety, ensure compliance with safety standards, and instill public confidence in the use of lifts and escalators. The resolution calls for the government to take immediate steps to implement these regulations, underscoring the importance of safety in the rapidly urbanizing state.
