Panaji, May 16 — The Goa Crime Branch has apprehended a 32-year-old man for allegedly issuing threats to Subhash Phal Desai, the state’s social welfare minister, and his family.
According to Superintendent of Police (Crime Branch) Rahul Gupta, the accused, Mithil Ulhas Desai, a resident of Carmona in Sanguem taluka, South Goa district, was arrested after he abused the minister and his family over the phone earlier on Wednesday.
Mithil Ulhas Desai allegedly used abusive language and made severe threats, demanding a payment of Rs 20 crore from the minister. He threatened to frame Subhash Desai in a murder case if his demands were not met.
Incriminating messages were discovered on the accused’s mobile phone, which has been confiscated by the authorities, Gupta revealed.
Following the complaint lodged by Subhash Desai, the police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Mithil Ulhas Desai under several sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including:
- Section 384: Extortion
- Section 388: Extortion by threat of accusation of an offence punishable with death or imprisonment for life
- Section 504: Intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace
- Section 506: Criminal intimidation
