ALDONA: Government-built structures, like bridges, need regular maintenance to avoid large repair works, said Aldona MLA Carlos Alvares Ferreira.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the restoration of the Carona Calvin bridge on Monday.
“Since the time it was built, there was no maintenance on this bridge. There should be regular maintenance of such works. If this is not done then at one go, then a huge amount of work needs to be taken up. The steel work is corroded and the colour of the bridge has also faded. Even the approach roads need repairs,” he said.
The work will be taken up at a cost of Rs 59 lakh, Ferreira said.
After addressing the corrosion work, the lighting work will also be taken up, the MLA said.
“The approach roads will be repaired as many accidents have taken place. I am happy that the development works are being approved. More works are in the pipeline. Work on the Corjuem bridge will also be taken up. I assure that this also will happen soon,” he said.
Ferreira thanked Chief Minister Pramod Sawant for sanctioning the work.
“I thank the CM as the tender was through and the work order was issued. I also thank Nilesh Cabral, even though he is not the PWD minister now. He had cleared the file during his tenure. I was constantly following up every week with him to ensure the work was cleared. I also thank the principal chief engineer for his proactiveness.” he said.
