Panaji, Dec 19: Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant honored the first-generation heirs of martyrs who laid down their lives during the Goa Liberation Struggle. In a ceremony held ahead of Goa Liberation Day, the martyrs’ families were presented with Certificates of Honour and monetary benefits as a tribute to their supreme sacrifice.
Dr. Sawant highlighted the Government’s continued efforts to commemorate the sacrifices of freedom fighters. He recalled his visit in 2022 to Haryana, where he felicitated Veerpatni of Martyr Shri Karnail Singh Benipal, whose contributions to Goa’s liberation remain unforgettable.
Paying homage to martyrs, the Chief Minister honored the families of Shri Bala Raya Mapari, Basavraj Hudgi, Sheshnath Wadekar, Tulshiram Balkrishna Hirve, Baburao Keshav Thorat, Sakharam Shirodkar, Rohidas Mapari, Yeshwant Agarwadekar, Ramchandra Nevgi, Bapu Vishnu Gavas, Babla Parab, Laxman Velingkar, Keshavbhai Tengse, and Parshuram Acharya.
Reflecting on history, Dr. Sawant noted that Goa endured nearly 450 years of oppressive Portuguese rule before liberation. He emphasized the significance of the struggle post-India’s independence, when freedom fighters from across the country united with Goans to overthrow colonial rule.
The Chief Minister stated that 74 brave souls made the ultimate sacrifice during the liberation movement. Recognizing their sacrifice, he reiterated the Government’s unwavering commitment to honor their legacy and support their families. He added that their courage and dedication paved the way for a free Goa, and it is the responsibility of future generations to cherish and uphold this legacy.
Dr. Sawant urged citizens to draw inspiration from the valor of these freedom fighters as Goa moves forward in building a united and prosperous nation.
