Panaji: In a case of online fraud linked to a fake RTO challan message, the Panaji Police Station has registered an offence following a complaint from a local resident.
The complainant alleged that unknown persons sent him a malicious APK file titled “RTO e-Challan,” claiming that he had an outstanding traffic fine. After downloading the file, he was prompted to enter his banking details. The accused allegedly gained unauthorised access to his bank account as well as his WhatsApp account and fraudulently withdrew ₹1,37,833.
Police have registered the case against unknown persons, and further investigation is underway.
Citizens are advised not to download APK files or click on suspicious links received through SMS or messaging platforms. Authorities have urged the public to verify any traffic challan only through official government portals and immediately report such incidents to the cyber crime cell.
