Margao – We are deeply concerned by the recent decisions taken by the Government of Goa, including the clearance granted to a casino company to set up a township in Pernem by converting CADA land and the announcement by a Union Minister for Power Manoharlal Khatter regarding the establishment of a nuclear power plant in our tiny, ecologically sensitive state. These actions raise critical questions about the priorities of those in power and their long-term vision for Goa and its people, stated Madganvcho Awaaz and Youth Leader Prabhav Naik.
At this critical juncture, we earnestly appeal to scientists, environmentalists, urban planners, and public health experts to step forward and guide Goans in understanding the full implications of these government decisions. Your knowledge and independent assessments are vital to help protect the people of Goa from irreversible environmental damage and socio-economic disruption. We welcome your voices, support, and solidarity in our efforts to safeguard the public interest, Prabhav Naik said.
The allocation of valuable agricultural land in Pernem for a township project linked to the casino industry threatens to erode Goa’s agrarian identity. Our fields, which once nourished generations with sweet potato chips and banana chips, now risk being replaced by casino chips. Such commercialization will displace farming communities and permanently alter the socio-economic fabric of the region. Is this the legacy we wish to leave for future generations?, questioned Prabhav Naik.
Furthermore, the proposal to install a nuclear power plant in Goa is alarming. This state, known for its dense population, fragile coastline, and tourism-based economy, is a completely inappropriate location for a nuclear facility. Radiation risks, potential accidents, and long-term waste management concerns are simply not compatible with Goa’s geographical and demographic realities, claimed Prabhav Naik.
These moves appear to signal a governance model that values short-term profits over sustainable development and the wellbeing of its citizens. The government must be reminded that Goa’s identity is not for sale. Our land, our health, and our future cannot be compromised to serve the interests of powerful industries, Prabhav Naik stated.
We call upon the people of Goa to unite, demand transparency, and hold decision-makers accountable. Let us safeguard our state’s natural heritage, agricultural roots, and public health for generations to come. Goa deserves a future built on sustainability, not exploitation, said Prabhav Naik.
