Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has expressed deep anguish over the Arpora tragedy, calling it an extremely painful and heartbreaking day for Goa. He said he shares the sorrow of the families who have lost their loved ones in this unimaginable disaster.

Alemao stated that such unthinkable tragedies occurring in Goa raise serious questions about the state’s administration. He urged the government to immediately announce and disburse compensation to the affected families on humanitarian grounds, stressing that their loss is irreparable.

He strongly criticised the government, claiming that the incident is a clear reflection of a complete breakdown of governance. According to him, the administration seems to be “in sleep mode,” pointing out that the nightclub involved was operating without the mandatory licences and permissions, exposing glaring lapses in oversight.

Calling the incident “a shame to the government,” Alemao said the tragedy has projected Goa internationally as an unsafe tourist destination. “As if the rising cases of rape, road accidents, drug-related crimes, and sexual offences were not already tarnishing the state’s image, now we have lost 25 lives due to a fire in a club frequented by tourists,” he remarked.

Alemao has demanded stringent action and accountability from the government, asserting that the people of Goa deserve safety, transparency, and responsible governance.
