Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao has reiterated the urgent need to address three critical issues threatening Goa’s identity and future: the lifeline Mhadei River, the unchecked casino industry, and rampant land conversions. Speaking at a forum where members of the 1st Vidhan Sabha (1989-94) were felicitated, Alemao emphasized that these issues have only worsened over time, demanding immediate legislative attention.
Key Issues Highlighted:
- Mhadei River Crisis: Alemao criticized the lack of progress in protecting Mhadei, pointing to increasing threats to the ecosystem, including the presence of tigers in Kankumbi and the government’s inaction on declaring Mhadei a tiger reserve despite National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) records.
- Casino Dominance: He expressed concern over Goa’s economy becoming overly dependent on casinos, stating it tarnishes Goa’s image as a land of spirituality and culture.
- Land Grabbing and Conversions: Alemao condemned the reckless sale and transfer of land, which he termed as a growing menace harming Goa’s future.
He called upon the Goa Legislators’ Forum to act decisively, stating, “The forum should not remain silent on these critical issues. Former legislators, with a few exceptions, have maintained an inexplicable silence on these matters.”
Social Harmony at Risk: Alemao also warned against the rising communal tensions being instigated in Goa, calling it a threat to the state’s harmonious fabric. He urged for a crackdown on the growing narcotics trade, which he labeled a danger to Goa’s youth and identity.
Concluding his address, Alemao appealed for a united effort by legislators, past and present, to steer Goa towards a sustainable and inclusive future.
