PANAJI: Chanting slogans of ‘Justice for women’, members of Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress on Thursday held ‘Naari Nyay Andolan’, a women’s justice march aimed at raising awareness about women’s rights, gender justice, and the urgent need for effective implementation of the Women’s Reservation Act.
The march, that was held in Panaji from Congress House to Azad Maidan, witnessed the participation of Mahila Congress leaders, activists, and supporters, all dressed in red to symbolize strength and determination.
As part of the movement, Congress Mahila leaders demanded immediate action on the Women’s Reservation Bill to ensure greater political representation and decision-making power for women across all levels of governance.
Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress President Dr. Pratiksha Khalap said that the andolan is being held across the country.
“We are raising our voice against the injustice towards women of this country. Women constitute more than 50 of the population, yet we are being used one as a vote bank. The government has not made any provisions for women. The state government is not concerned about the welfare of women. Nearly Last year, 367 cases were reported which included various crimes against women. But what is ironic is the Chief Minister saying that Goa ranks top in the country for women’s safety. He should take a look at night how the streetlights are not working, there are no cameras, etc. And since the start of the year, 63 cases have already been reported,” she said.
She also criticised Goa Women’s Commission Chairperson for stating that women should not have any expectations from the government.
“If such statements are made then the Chief minister and such people appointed by the government to these commissions should resign. There is complete failure of law and order. We will continue to raise our voice against all issues concerning women. Our main demand is 33% political reservation for women which should be implemented at the earliest by conducting a census and delimitation to reserve seats for the 2027 assembly elections. For better governance and administration, we need more women in the Parliament and state assembly.
GPMC General Secretary Liberata Madeira said, “Government’s catchy slogans like Beti Bachao Beti Padhao sounds nice but these are of no use. When women go out of their house, they don’t know whether they will reach home safely. Crime rate is increasing by the day.”
Party’s executive member Adv Lavinia Da Costa said, “If the police can’t give women protection, then where should we go? We need to get the confidence of the women police. That’s how women will come out to speak about the atrocities.”
