Goa, 13th July 2024 – Manipal Hospital Goa announces a groundbreaking achievement in surgical oncology with the successful completion of the Video-Assisted Thoracoscopic Surgery (VATS) procedure in the Panjim region. The procedure was performed by Dr. Sredharan M, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Manipal Hospital Goa, and his surgical team on a 72-year-old woman.

VATS is a minimally invasive surgical technique. It utilizes a tiny camera (thoracoscope) and surgical instruments inserted through small incisions in the chest. This technique helps surgeons operate with less trauma compared to traditional open surgery.
As the patient was diagnosed with early-stage non-small cell lung cancer in her right lower lobe, Dr. Sredharan M recommended VATS as the surgical procedure to the patient’s family. Following discussions with the family, Dr. Sredharan and his team proceeded with the VATS procedure.
After completing the surgery, Dr. Sreedharan M said, “Given her condition, VATS was chosen due to its numerous benefits, including reduced pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery. The thoracoscope provided high-definition images, allowing us to precisely remove the lobe affected by cancer.”

The procedure was conducted under the expertise and guidance of Dr. Sredharan M, Consultant Surgical Oncology, Dr. Yogesh Gaude, Consultant – Anesthesia and Pain Management, Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief – Dept. of Oncology along with the oncology team of Manipal Hospital Goa, including technicians and nurses.
Dr. Yogesh Gaude, Consultant of Anesthesia and Pain Management, reported, “The patient experienced minimal discomfort and pain post-surgery, which is a significant improvement over traditional open chest surgeries. She recovered well and was discharged within a few days. She has continued her recovery at home with regular follow-ups,”

Dr. Shekhar Salkar, Chief – Dept. of Oncology, emphasized, “This case exemplifies the advancements in surgical techniques that enhance patient outcomes. The use of VATS, particularly for elderly patients, showcases the benefits of less invasive procedures. Beyond lung cancer, VATS can also treat conditions such as esophageal cancer, intra-thoracic tumors, and removal of lung metastases,”
This successful surgery underscores Manipal Hospital-Goa’s commitment to adopting advanced medical technologies and techniques, ensuring that patients receive the highest standard of care.
