Panaji: Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao stated on Friday that governance has failed due to the misplaced priorities of the incapacitated BJP government, and hence the menace of open defecation continues to haunt the state.

The Congress held a ‘Samvidhan Bachao Abhiyan’ meeting for the Cumbharjua, St. Andre, and Priol constituencies at Cumbharjua. While interacting with locals, Alemao assured them that he would work to resolve the open defecation issue in the area.

GPCC President Amit Patkar, MP Viriato Fernandes, Congress leader Tulio Dsouza, Cumbharjua Block President Vishal Volvoikar, St Andre Block President Manoj Palkar, Priol Block President Gurudas Korgaonkar, Samil Volvoikar, Mahila President Pratiksha Khalap, Mahesh Nadar, and others were present.

“This government is only focused on achieving fake status labels like ‘open defecation free’, ‘Har Ghar Jal’, and ‘100 percent literacy’. The reality is that this government has failed to supply water even for two hours. Open defecation is still prevalent in many places,” Alemao said.

He added that crime incidents are increasing in the state due to unemployment issues across the country.

“Our youths are being deprived of jobs in our own state by industries operating on our land. The government has failed to generate employment and prioritize locals in these industries,” he said.

Alemao emphasized the importance of protecting Khazan land and saving Goa’s rivers. “We need people’s support to save our Goem from the clutches of the BJP, which is destroying our environment and dividing us along religious lines,” he said.

The locals raised concerns about safety issues for women working in industrial estates, protection of the Carambolim lake, a new railway station at Neura, and house repairs, among others.

Alemao assured them that he would raise these issues on appropriate platforms and during the assembly session.

Amit Patkar stated that there is a need to protect the Constitution, which the BJP is trying to undermine. “The BJP doesn’t respect our Constitution and is trying to eliminate opposition by encouraging defection. But we are confident that Congress will form a government in 2027,” Patkar said.
