Margao – As we enter the centenary year of Padma Vibhushan Mario Miranda, India’s beloved cartoonist who captured the soul of a generation, it’s time the government steps up. Celebrate his 100th with national tributes, exhibitions, honors and a monument. He deserves nothing less, stated Madganvcho Awaaz & Youth Leader Prabhav Naik.

Remembering great Goan cartoonist Maria Miranda on the commencement of his birth centenary year, Prabhav Naik urged the Government to take up the celebrations of ongoing as well as the forthcoming birth centenary year events of eminent Goans, so as to reintroduce them to new generations as well as remember their rich contributions.

The government should prioritize funding centenary celebrations of great Goans to honor their lasting contributions to our culture, history, and identity. These individuals, through their work in literature, politics, science, arts, sports and social reform, have shaped Goa’s legacy and left an indelible mark on its society, said Prabhav Naik.

Routine government events often consume large budgets without leaving a lasting cultural impact. Redirecting a portion of these funds toward meaningful commemorations would ensure that public spending contributes to long-term community enrichment. Unlike short-term festivities, centenary celebrations have educational value and can serve as a bridge between generations, reminding us of the depth of our history and the people who shaped it, said Prabhav Naik.

These events can also promote cultural pride and unity. When a society honors its icons, it reinforces shared identity and common values. Public celebrations, exhibitions, documentaries, school programs and a monument built around these commemorations can help instill a sense of ownership and belonging among citizens, particularly among the youth who may not be aware of these figures and their significance, Prabhav Naik claimed.

This year also coincides with birth centenary year of two great Madganvkars, Padma Bhushan Laxman Pai and renowned Cinematographer K. Vaikunth alias Vaikunth Kuncolienkar. I had appealed to Government to commemorate their birth centenaries with official programs & events, reminded Prabhav Naik.

Preserving our heritage is not just about protecting monuments or artifacts, it is also about keeping the stories of our people alive. . The government has both the responsibility and the opportunity to ensure that the legacies of great Goans continue to inspire and guide our society, said Prabhav Naik.
