Panaji, May 27: Goa Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar has launched an initiative called ‘Shram Dham’ to build houses for underprivileged people with the support of the community. This initiative targets constructing hundreds of homes in five selected constituencies.
Under ‘Shram Dham,’ volunteers dedicate one day a week to build homes for the needy. The initiative has already seen significant progress, with around 28 houses currently being constructed and many completed in Canacona. Tawadkar, a prominent leader of the Scheduled Tribe community in Goa, believes it is feasible to build 400 to 500 houses annually with societal support.
“Former Union Minister Suresh Prabhu has been appointed as the ambassador of this concept,” Tawadkar announced.
The initiative has expanded from Canacona to other constituencies, including Sanguem, Quepem, Sanvordem (South Goa), and Priol (North Goa). The concept has attracted widespread attention and support, with people across the state contributing funds and labor.
Individuals are encouraged to donate as little as Rs 1 and dedicate a day to building homes for the underprivileged. Tawadkar emphasized the impact of community support, stating, “With your help, we can construct 400 to 500 houses annually for poor people.”
He urged people to join this cause, highlighting that over 1,000 volunteers have already registered to assist in ongoing projects. This collective effort aims to ensure that even the poorest individuals have access to a fundamental necessity: a home.
