Margao: “The defacement of the historic Lohia Maidan, Margao with slogans such as ‘Save Wangchuk’ and ‘Sonam Matters’ is not only an act of vandalism but also an assault on a peaceful activist fighting for the cause of students. At the same time, this incident vindicates the consistent stand of Madganvcho Awaaz that the administration has failed to protect and preserve this historic monument,” stated Youth Leader Prabhav Naik.

Reacting to the defacement of the historic Lohia Maidan with graffiti on the backdrop wall and skirting of the stage, reportedly during the night of 19th July 2026, Prabhav Naik demanded an immediate investigation into the incident and strict action against the culprits. He said those responsible must be identified and prosecuted so that such acts of vandalism are not repeated at heritage sites.

Prabhav Naik said the incident has exposed the government’s insensitivity towards protecting places of immense historical importance. Lohia Maidan is the historic site where Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia, Dr. Juliao Menezes and several other freedom fighters ignited the flame of Goa’s freedom movement, which ultimately culminated in the liberation of Goa. Such a sacred site deserves the highest level of protection and respect.

He pointed out that Madganvcho Awaaz has consistently highlighted the failure of the authorities to maintain and preserve Lohia Maidan. The monument today reflects official neglect, with poorly maintained urinals, broken benches, overgrown weeds and an overall lack of upkeep, diminishing the dignity of one of Goa’s most significant historical landmarks.

Prabhav Naik urged the Government to immediately restore the defaced portions of the monument, undertake comprehensive beautification and conservation works, install CCTV surveillance, strengthen security arrangements and ensure regular maintenance of the premises. He said heritage monuments cannot be left vulnerable to vandalism because of administrative negligence.
