MAPUSA:
Aldona MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira has strongly condemned the recent acid attack on a 17-year-old student in Dhargalim and announced that the Congress Party will raise the issue of deteriorating law and order in the upcoming Goa Legislative Assembly session.

Describing the incident as “shocking,” Ferreira questioned the government’s failure to ensure the safety of its citizens. “What safety do we have today? Women, minors, and even the elderly are being raped. And now this acid attack — what is the police and government doing about it?” he asked.

Ferreira held the Chief Minister, who also holds the Home portfolio, accountable and demanded that he explain the background of the attack, the status of police intelligence, and what measures are in place to ensure public safety.

Emphasizing the need to strengthen surveillance infrastructure, Ferreira called for an urgent upgrade of the state’s security network, especially the installation and maintenance of CCTV cameras. “Such crimes can happen to anyone. Our CCTV network must be robust. Merces junction’s AI cameras are not functioning. Even in Margao, CCTVs have been non-operational due to poor maintenance,” he stated.

He criticized the authorities for failing to maintain critical security systems and slammed the government for relying on symbolic arrests without ensuring real accountability. “We had once requested CCTV footage from police stations and were told the cameras weren’t working due to contract lapses and lack of replacements. This is unacceptable,” he said.

Ferreira reiterated that the Congress Party will persistently raise the issue in the assembly and push for concrete steps to improve law enforcement and public security across Goa.
