The Entertainment Society of Goa (ESG), in association with the Government of Goa, has announced the third edition of its Aakash Kandil (traditional lantern-making) competition as part of the 57th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2026. The initiative aims to promote Goa’s rich cultural heritage while providing a platform for residents to showcase their artistic skills, creativity and craftsmanship through traditional and innovative lantern designs.

The competition is open to all residents of Goa, with participants required to create lanterns using eco-friendly materials. This year’s entries must be based on the theme of the IFFI mascot, the Peacock. The use of thermocol is strictly prohibited. To ensure participation from across the state, the competition will be conducted on a taluka-wise basis, with a maximum of 50 entries permitted from each taluka and an overall limit of 600 entries. Registrations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Each participant will receive ₹500 as a token of appreciation for their participation and creative effort.

The last date for registration is November 17, 2026, up to 5 pm. Participants will be required to submit their completed Aakash Kandils at the ESG office on November 25, between 9.30 am and 12.30 pm. ESG will make arrangements for displaying the lanterns by providing holders, bulbs and electricity connections.

The competition will recognise three winners from each taluka. The first-prize winner will receive ₹10,000, while the second and third-prize winners will be awarded ₹8,000 and ₹5,000, respectively. The winners will be selected by a panel of judges, whose decision will be final and binding. The prize distribution ceremony is scheduled to take place on November 27, 2026.

Through this initiative, ESG seeks to encourage community participation and preserve traditional art forms while adding to the festive and cultural atmosphere surrounding IFFI celebrations in Goa.
