Gavin Dias, GM, Goa Tourism Development Corporation, Shri. Deepak Narvekar, Dy GM, Goa Tourism Development Corporation; along with senior officials and staff of the Goa Forest Development Corporation.
The outlet is an initiative that brings together the vision of self-reliance, the promotion of indigenous products and the commitment to making the best of Goa’s natural wealth accessible to its people and visitors.
The concept of Swayampurna Goa draws inspiration from the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji’s vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, which emphasises self-reliance, local enterprise and the strength of indigenous industries. It also reflects the vision of Hon’ble Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant, who has been working towards making Goa self-reliant through the Swayampurna Goa initiative by empowering local communities, encouraging entrepreneurship and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities.
At the Goa Forest Development Corporation, forests are viewed not merely as natural resources that need to be protected, but also as sources of livelihood, traditional knowledge, cultural identity and economic opportunity. The Corporation recognises the importance of ensuring that the benefits of Goa’s natural wealth reach local communities while maintaining a responsible balance with nature.
The Sylvan Outlet is a step in this direction.
One of the key offerings at the outlet will be GFDC’s cashew nuts, along with GoVan products from the Goa State Biodiversity Board. Goan cashews, renowned for their quality and distinctive taste, are deeply connected to the state’s agricultural heritage and traditions. Making these products available through the outlet creates another platform to promote Goa’s indigenous produce and strengthen its market presence.
Initiatives such as the Sylvan Outlet can open new avenues for local producers, artisans, women’s self-help groups and rural entrepreneurs by connecting their products with a wider customer base. They also have the potential to encourage entrepreneurship and self-employment among women and youth, while strengthening village economies through the promotion of locally made products.
The launch of the outlet at Calangute, one of Goa’s prominent tourism destinations, holds particular significance. Visitors to Goa should experience more than its beaches, tourist attractions and scenic landscapes. They should also have the opportunity to discover the authentic culture of Goa, appreciate its indigenous products and take home a part of its rich natural and cultural heritage.
The benefits of tourism must extend beyond established tourist destinations and reach the villages, farmers, women, artisans and local entrepreneurs who form the backbone of Goa’s communities. This is the essence of inclusive and sustainable development.
The vision is to expand such initiatives to more locations, encourage greater participation from local producers and provide Goa’s indigenous products with the recognition and market opportunities they deserve.
The Swayampurna Goa – Sylvan Outlet aspires to become a meaningful example of how conservation, local enterprise, tourism and sustainable development can complement one another, while advancing the larger vision of a self-reliant Goa.
