GOA PLUS NEWS, SPECIAL STORY: In a concerning trend, the number of license suspensions for traffic violations in Goa has witnessed a significant increase in the first six months of 2023. As per the latest data, a total of 4,756 licenses were suspended from January to June 2023, surpassing the total number of suspensions recorded for the entire year of 2022.

The violations that led to these suspensions include red light jumping, over speeding, using mobile phones while driving, driving under the influence of drinks and/or drugs, and driving without a helmet. Red light jumping accounted for the highest number of license suspensions, with 409 cases reported during this period. Over speeding violations followed closely behind, with 764 licenses suspended.

Other offenses such as overloading in goods carriages, carrying persons in goods carriages, and driving/pillion riding without a helmet also contributed to the overall number of suspensions. Despite the enforcement authorities receiving 3,767 requests from the police and Regional Transport Office (RTO), a significant number of cases, totaling 2,312, are still pending for further action.

This rise in license suspensions highlights the pressing need for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and increased awareness among motorists about responsible driving practices. The authorities are urged to take necessary measures to address these alarming statistics and ensure road safety for all commuters.

Goa residents are advised to strictly adhere to traffic rules, avoid engaging in reckless driving behaviors, and prioritize the safety of themselves and others on the road. Together, we can create a safer and more responsible driving culture in the state.
