The Old Goa Panchayat stepping in to take measurements of the illegal structure erected at the Old Goa heritage site paves the way for optimism said Aam Aadmi Party leader Amit Palekar on Thursday.

Palekar told the media, “As required under the Panchayat Raj Act, the Old Goa Panchayat has measured the illegal structure in the presence of the Old Goa Sarpanch, the secretary, and all others who were following the issue”.

“In the case of Old Goa issue, certainly the legal process is under way, and I believe that it must be followed that way. The Old Goa Panchayat seems to be on the right track and there is cause for optimism. I’ll follow up this issue until the structure is demolished”, he added.

He further said, “This type of construction being allowed to take place at the old Goa Heritage site in such a blatant manner in such a short period of time is astounding to me and this structure needs to be demolished immediately”.

“Those government departments involved in granting the permission for the illegal construction need to be held accountable. At present, the Old Goa panchayat has been fulfills its legal obligations”, he added.

The Old Goa Panchayat Sarpanch stated that they have taken the measurements of the illegal structure and in 4-5 days they will hold an urgent meeting to discuss it further.
