Morjim Football Ground Neglect: Government Promises Unfulfilled

Published

on

Morjim Football Ground is in a deplorable state despite significant government spending. No matches have been held since last year due to the ground’s poor condition, including uneven levels and inadequate maintenance. The building on the premises is near collapse, with only one standing pole as the other has collapsed. The surrounding gates have deteriorating wooden protection, and the large building lacks a coach or any government camps for players. Consequently, Morjim children travel to Chopdem Ground for practice and coaching. Additionally, beers are frequently consumed at the stadium, and organizing a tournament requires a hefty entry fee of Rs 3000 per game.

Ex-national kabaddi player Shivnath Shetgaonkar and social worker Albert Fernandes have highlighted these issues. Despite a visit and inspection by Sports Minister Govind Gawde, sports department officers, and MLA Jit Arolkar on November 3, 2022, where the minister promised upgrades to the ground and stands, no action has been taken.
