During the monsoon assembly session, MLA Sankalp Amonkar delivered a detailed address, emphasizing the urgent need for several projects in the Mormugao constituency. He expressed gratitude to the Hon. Minister for WRD, Shri. Subhash Shirodkar, for considering various proposals.
Amonkar highlighted the plight of traditional fishermen in Baina and Desterro, who are forced to park their canoes in neighboring villages during the monsoon. He proposed the improvement of the existing nallah at Baina by desilting and creating an opening to the sea, providing safe shelter for canoes. This project, currently stalled due to a pending NOC from the GCZMA, has completed all necessary inspections and a detailed project report has been submitted. Amonkar urged the Minister and Chief Minister to expedite the approval process.
He also discussed the need for the rejuvenation and beautification of a spring at Lower Jetty in Mormugao, a project poised to attract more tourists to the area, especially with the increasing popularity of Baina beach and the arrival of cruise vessels at Mormugao Port.
Further, Amonkar addressed the proposal for strengthening the walls of the nallah near Khapreshwar Temple at Sada to prevent soil erosion, a project deemed essential due to the temple’s proximity to the nallah.
The MLA also pointed out the vulnerability of areas like Sada, Bogda, Desterro, Jetty, Rumdawada, and Harbour to landslides. He urged the WRD to prioritize the construction of retaining walls under disaster management schemes to protect homes and prevent landslides.
Additionally, Amonkar proposed the construction of a multipurpose cyclone shelter at Headland Sada on vacant land owned by MPA and the State Government. This shelter could serve as a refuge during disasters and as a community center for public welfare activities during non-crisis times.
Addressing the issue of sand erosion affecting Goa’s beaches, including Baina, Amonkar advocated for environmentally friendly methods to mitigate erosion, thus safeguarding the homes of traditional fishermen.
On the matter of co-operative societies, Amonkar noted the challenges faced by the South Zone Office of the Assistant Registrar of Co-operative Societies, which oversees Mormugao and Salcete regions. He argued for the establishment of a separate office in Mormugao to improve the efficiency of inspections and administrative tasks, catering to over 400 co-operative societies in the area.
