Panaji: The Goa Pradesh Mahila Congress (GPMC) has criticized the Centre and the Manipur state government for their failure to control the escalating violence in Manipur. In a press conference held on Tuesday, GPMC Chief Beena Naik, along with Vice President Roshan Desai, General Secretary Libby Madeira, and General Secretary of Panaji Block Eslinda Gonsalvis, demanded immediate efforts to restore peace in the troubled region.
Naik highlighted the severity of the situation, with more than five thousand houses set on fire and numerous casualties, including children. She expressed concern over the plight of around sixty thousand people currently seeking refuge in relief camps. Despite these grave circumstances, both the Manipur government and the central government have been criticized for their lack of action.
Governor Anusuiya Uikey’s recent condemnation of a viral video showing women being paraded naked was appreciated by Naik. However, she pointed out that the governments’ actions have been inadequate in addressing the issue.
Adding to the criticism, Manipur BJP MLA Paolienlal Haokip alleged that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been unresponsive to his own MLAs’ attempts to apprise him of the situation. Naik raised questions about the government’s willingness to address the concerns of the public when it is not listening to its own party members.
Expressing her concerns, Naik wondered if the country was heading towards anarchy, where the government seemed indifferent to the people’s plight while miscreants acted without fear of consequences or regard for the law and constitution.
In light of the escalating violence and unrest, Naik fervently appealed to the government to prioritize Manipur’s interests and take immediate steps to restore peace in the region.
