Illegal Casino Advertisements Take Over Panjim, Claims Ponnjekars Against Casinos

Panaji: Ponnjekars Against Casinos has strongly criticized the alleged unchecked spread of casino advertisements across Panjim, calling it an “illegal takeover” of the capital city’s public spaces. In a press release issued on March 19, the group stated that casinos have occupied prime road spaces, footpaths, and riverfront areas with hoardings and signage, blocking even the view of the river promenade.

The group alleged that the Government of Goa and the Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) have allowed casinos to operate freely without regulation. Raising concerns over alleged illegal advertising practices, the group filed an RTI with CCP seeking details on permissions and revenue from casino advertisements. According to the response received, CCP stated that no permissions were granted and no revenue was collected for such advertisements.

Following this, the group met CCP Commissioner Clen Madeira on March 16, highlighting the issue and urging immediate removal of the hoardings. The Commissioner reportedly assured that the matter would be examined and also verified with the police authorities. However, during a meeting with SP Traffic Shirwaiker, the delegation was informed that the barricades carrying casino advertisements were not issued by the traffic police, further deepening the mystery over their origin.

The group has now written to CCP demanding immediate removal of what it termed “unauthorised and illegal” barricades. It questioned why authorities have failed to act over the years and raised concerns over the normalization of gambling through widespread advertising, even near educational institutions and public events.

Calling Panjim a heritage city, the group described the proliferation of casino hoardings as “visual pollution” and accused authorities of double standards, pointing out that such advertisements are covered during high-profile visits like those of the Prime Minister or international events such as the G20 Summit.

Ponnjekars Against Casinos has demanded swift action from the CCP, offering citizen support if required to remove the barricades and restore the city’s aesthetics. The group expressed hope that authorities will act within the week to curb the alleged illegality.
