Panaji, August 12, 2025 – Goa Congress leaders and workers were detained by police on Monday while marching towards the Chief Electoral Officer’s office in Altinho, Panaji, as part of a nationwide protest against alleged electoral malpractice.
The demonstration was held in solidarity with AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi, and several INDIA bloc MPs who were detained in Delhi while marching from Parliament to the Election Commission. The protest aimed to oppose the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, highlight what the party calls the BJP’s attack on free and fair elections, and demand impartial action from the Election Commission.
Leading the march in Goa were GPCC President Amit Patkar, Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, and MLA Altone D’Costa, accompanied by party office bearers and workers. They accused the BJP government of misusing power to silence the Opposition and undermine democracy.
The Congress stated that despite being stopped and detained by police en route to the CEO’s office, their resolve to defend the Constitution and people’s mandate remains strong. The party reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding democratic principles, ensuring free and fair elections, and resisting all attempts to subvert the will of the people.
