Verlem – A productive meeting was convened at Verlem, Netravali, to discuss the Homestay and Bed and Breakfast Policy. The session saw active participation from key officials of the Goa Tourism Department and prominent local stakeholders. Among the attendees were Mr. Deepak Narvekar, Deputy General Manager Marketing/Hotels GTDC, Mr. Dhiraj Vagle, Deputy Director of Tourism, Mr. Parag Rangnekar, GTB Board Member, Mr. Harish Satelkar, Manager of Marketing GTDC, Shri Shashikant Gaonkar, Chairman of Atal Gram Yojana, Mr. Ashok Gaonkar, Panch Member of V.P. Netravali, members of the Verlem Ecotourism Cooperative Society, and other community members.
The meeting focused on enhancing and refining the Homestay and Bed and Breakfast Policy to benefit the local community, promoting sustainable tourism, and providing visitors with authentic Goan experiences like traditional dances,. Discussions emphasized the need for a cohesive approach, with all stakeholders contributing to the successful implementation of the policy.
During the meeting, Mr. Dhiraj Vagle, Deputy Director of Tourism, explained the concept and details of the Homestay and Bed and Breakfast Policy to the audience. He highlighted how this initiative is designed to promote tourism that benefits local communities by providing tourists with a genuine experience of Goan culture and hospitality.
Mr. Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director Tourism & Managing Director GTDC, remarked, “The Homestay and Bed and Breakfast Policy is a pivotal step towards empowering our local communities while offering tourists a chance to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Goa. We believe that with the active involvement of local stakeholders, this initiative will not only boost tourism but also ensure sustainable development in the region.”
Mr. Deepak Narvekar, Deputy General Manager Marketing/Hotels GTDC, added, “By focusing on local involvement and sustainable practices, we can ensure that tourism growth aligns with the preservation of our natural and cultural resources. This policy is a testament to our commitment to responsible tourism. Local traditional dances and cuisines can be provided to guests staying at the homestays, they can witness unique festivals and experiences happening in the area.”
Mr. Parag Rangnekar, GTB Board Member, said, “The collective efforts of the community and the government are essential for the success of this policy. Our goal is to create a framework that benefits everyone, from the hosts to the visitors, while maintaining the charm and authenticity of rural Goa. The guests staying at the homestay can be taken on treks which are available in the local area.”
The meeting concluded with a commitment from all parties to continue working together towards the effective execution of the policy, ensuring that it serves both the local population and the broader objectives of Goa’s tourism strategy.
