Women and child welfare has emerged as a key focus area in Goa’s development journey, with a series of initiatives aimed at improving maternal health, early childhood education, and financial support for families. These efforts reflect a broader push toward building stronger communities by investing in the well-being of women and children.
One of the significant developments in this space has been the implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), under which over 34,000 mothers in Goa have received financial support through direct benefit transfers. The scheme plays an important role in supporting maternal health by providing financial assistance during pregnancy and after childbirth.
Complementing this is the Mamta Scheme, which has benefited crores of mothers over time while also promoting the welfare of the girl child. Together, these initiatives aim to ensure that both mothers and children receive the necessary support during critical stages of development.
Financial assistance has also been strengthened through the convergence of multiple schemes, with up to ₹16,000 provided as maternity assistance per family. This combined support helps reduce financial stress for families while encouraging better healthcare and nutrition practices.
Alongside financial support, there has been a growing emphasis on improving early childhood education and care. Around 125 Anganwadi centres across Goa have been digitised, enabling better tracking of child development, improved service delivery, and more structured learning environments.
Anganwadi programmes are also evolving to provide more holistic development for children. Initiatives such as nutrition awareness, yoga sessions, and kitchen garden learning are being introduced to promote healthy habits from an early age while also encouraging community participation.
Reinforcing the focus on healthcare access, Vishwajit Rane has emphasised the importance of prioritising women’s health, stating, “Women’s health is a priority and the government is working to ensure better access to healthcare facilities and medical support for women across Goa.” This aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen maternal care and expand healthcare services across the state.
He has also previously highlighted the importance of long-term development, noting, “Without proper infrastructure and educational projects, how do we transform rural Goa?”a perspective that connects welfare initiatives with broader community progress.
These combined efforts reflect a shift toward a more integrated approach to women and child development, one that goes beyond financial assistance to include education, health, and overall well-being.
As Goa continues to invest in its future, the focus on women and children remains central ensuring that development is inclusive and that communities grow stronger with better access to healthcare, education, and financial support.
