Celebrating World Tourism Day 2024: A week of cultural heritage and youth engagement in Goa

Panaji, September 30, 2024: In a lively celebration of World Tourism Day 2024, the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa along with Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) and SKAL International Goa, organized a series of enriching activities from September 24 to September 29, 2024. Activities included engaging heritage walks, culinary event, and community meets that brought together participants to explore Goa’s rich tourism landscape.

The Department of Tourism embraced this year’s theme, Tourism & Peace, emphasizing the crucial role of tourism in building connections and understanding among individuals. By promoting interactions between travellers and locals, tourism acts as a bridge that fosters mutual respect and collaboration. The celebration aimed to demonstrate how tourism can strengthen personal relationships and encourage harmony, highlighting travel’s potential to unite people and pave the way for a more peaceful future.

Most of the events saw the presence of notable attendees including Minister for Tourism Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of GTDC Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, TTAG President, Shri Jack Sukhija, and SKAL International Goa President, Shri Vivek Kerker. Additionally, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant attended the Yuva Tourism Clubs meet as well as Goa’s largest stakeholders’ meet, while MLA of Sanvordem Constituency and GTDC Chairman Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar was present for the stakeholders’ meet. Secretary Tourism, Government of Goa, Shri Sanjeev Ahuja, IAS, was also present for the Yuva Tourism Clubs meet.

Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism and Managing Director of GTDC said, “This celebration exemplifies our steadfast commitment to creating a dynamic and inclusive tourism community in Goa. Through initiatives like the Yuva Tourism Clubs meet and various heritage walks, we cultivate meaningful connections between travellers and locals, ensuring that tourism becomes a genuine force for good. Gastronomy plays a vital role in this narrative, as we showcase Goa’s rich culinary heritage, bringing together diverse flavours that reflect our culture. In alignment with this year’s theme of Tourism & Peace, we recognize that tourism fosters understanding and connection among people, bridging cultural divides and promoting harmony. Together, we are paving the way for a sustainable and peaceful future, where Goa stands as a model for Regenerative Tourism. By empowering our youth, engaging our communities, and celebrating our culinary traditions, we not only protect our rich heritage but also promote a shared vision of progress that benefits everyone.”

The celebrations commenced on September 24 with a culinary highlight—the “Goencho Swad” cooking competition, hosted by the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM) in association with the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa, TTAG and SKAL International Goa. This event showcased Goa’s rich culinary traditions and marked the launch of “SAVOR GOA: The Best Restaurants,” a comprehensive coffee table book that offers insights into Goa’s diverse food culture at the hands of Minister for Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte along with award-winning author Shri Flavel Monteiro, in the esteemed presence of Shri Suneel Anchipaka, IAS, Director of Tourism, Shri Jack Sukhija, President of TTAG, and Smt. Dona D’Souza, Principal, IHM Goa.

The Department of Tourism, Government of Goa also hosted a Tourism Stakeholder Outreach Program on September 25 in collaboration with the TTAG and SKAL International Goa at Vivanta Goa, Miramar. This event brought together key stakeholders from various tourism sectors to share insights on enhancing tourism development in Goa, emphasizing the importance of collaboration and dialogue among industry players. Representatives from various tourism sectors, including watersports, beach shacks, waterparks, wellness tourism, and restaurant associations, gathered to share insights and discuss strategies for advancing tourism development in Goa

Following the outreach program, on September 26, the Department hosted one of the largest Yuva Tourism Clubs Meets at Darbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, Dona Paula. This event united more than 1,000 students and youth representatives from various educational institutions across Goa, aiming to empower the next generation of tourism leaders and shape the future of Goa’s dynamic tourism industry. The palpable excitement among the students highlighted their eagerness to engage and innovate, reflecting a collective commitment to redefining tourism in the state.

On the World Tourism Day that is September 27, Goa’s largest stakeholders’ meet was held at the scenic Nandanvan Spice Farm in collaboration with TTAG and SKAL International Goa. This significant gathering focused on collaborative efforts to enhance tourism development and sustainability in Goa. Key figures from the tourism industry, including Hon’ble Chief Minister, Dr. Pramod Sawant, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism, Shri Rohan A. Khaunte, Hon’ble Chairman of GTDC, Dr. Ganesh Gaonkar, attended. A colourful hand-printing activity involving the Chief Minister, Tourism Minister, and Director of Tourism added a personal and creative touch to the event.

On the same day, a special boat cruise ride was also organized for specially-abled children by Paradise Cruises and the Rotary Club Panaji, in collaboration with the Goa Tourism Department, TTAG, and SKAL International Goa. This meaningful initiative highlighted inclusivity and accessibility, offering these young individuals a memorable experience on Goa’s tranquil waters.

From September 27 to 29, the Department of Tourism organized a series of enriching heritage walks in collaboration with TTAG and SKAL International Goa, showcasing Goa’s vibrant beauty and history. Highlights included:

  1. Monte Santo Heritage Walk
    The Retracing Monte Santo Heritage Walk, hosted by the Museum of Christian Art, provided an enchanting exploration of four significant monuments on the revered Monte Santo hill on September 27. Participants journeyed through time, beginning at the tranquil Our Lady of the Rosary Church and continuing to the impressive St. Augustine Tower, as they uncovered the rich heritage of Old Goa.
  2. Saligao Scenic Walk
    Later that day, the Make It Happen team led a scenic exploration of the charming village of Saligao beginning at Mae De Deus Church. This walk takes participants on a scenic walk through the charming village of Saligao. Participants will be given the opportunity to explore local sights, discover hidden cultural treasures, and embrace the village’s serene atmosphere.
  3. Mapusa Market Walk
    On the same day, participants enjoyed a unique experience with Soul Travelling in Mapusa, where participants explored one of Goa’s oldest planned markets. This walk allowed for engaging interactions with local vendors and craftsmen, highlighting the vibrant market culture of Mapusa in an authentic and personal way.
  4. Life of Pao
    On September 28, a special walk titled “Life of Pao,” curated by Soul Travelling in Majorda, provided an interactive experience centred on one of Goa’s beloved culinary staples. Participants explored local bakeries, learned about traditional baking techniques, and enjoyed tastings that highlighted the cultural significance of pao (bread) in Goan cuisine.
  5. Trekking and nature trail
    Concluding the week, on September 29, a trekking expedition by Adventure Breaks and a nature trail organized by Mrugaya Expeditions provided participants with an exhilarating experience in Goa’s natural landscapes. These activities complemented the diverse offerings of the week-long celebration, promoting our jungle experience and allowing participants to enjoy our beautiful waterfalls.
  6. Temple Trail in Marcel
    On the same day the Temple Trail in Marcel curated by Soul Travelling offered a unique exploration of the spiritual and architectural beauty of local temples, including Shantadurga Kumbharjuvekarin, Devki Krishna Devasthan, along with other understanding the sacred rituals like Gharane, local aartis which allows the participants to delve into the rich traditions and practices.

The week-long celebration of World Tourism Day 2024 in Goa beautifully showcased the state’s cultural richness, culinary excellence, and commitment to youth engagement. From immersive heritage walks to culinary competitions and stakeholder discussion, these activities not only honoured the theme of Tourism & Peace but also laid the groundwork for a sustainable future in tourism. By emphasizing regenerative tourism, Goa aims to restore and enhance its natural and cultural assets. As Goa continues to embrace its diverse offerings, the spirit of collaboration and innovation remains a driving force in its tourism development.
