Panaji: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Goa finds itself in a dilemma as the initial shortlist of five male candidates for the South Goa Lok Sabha constituency faces hurdles. In response, the party is now considering the nomination of a woman candidate for the seat.
During a press conference following a core committee meeting, Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant emphasized the party’s respect for women. He stated that, given the challenges in finalizing a candidate from the shortlisted male politicians, the party is exploring the possibility of fielding a woman for the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024.
Initially shortlisting five male names, the scrutiny committee narrowed it down to three candidates. However, disinterest from two of them prompted the central leadership to seek alternative options, specifically focusing on women candidates.
The BJP, which has already committed to implementing 33 per cent reservation for women in 2029, is taking proactive steps to involve women in the electoral process ahead of schedule. The Central Election Committee has directed the Goa BJP to recommend women candidates for the South Goa seat.
Chief Minister Sawant explained the comprehensive process involved, including surveys and scrutiny, before finalizing the names. He mentioned that the party will consider candidates from its cadre, well-wishers, or extended family. Anticipating a thorough evaluation, he noted that the names might be announced in the second or third list.
In a parallel development, the BJP has already confirmed Union Minister of State for Tourism Shripad Naik as its candidate for the North Goa seat.
