Panaji: In a scathing attack, the Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Friday said that BJP is not interested in educational hub, but for business of land dealing over education and brokerage.

Addressing a press conference, Yuri Alemao said that the government is providing communidade lands to private universities, but in return our youths are not getting employment in these institutions.

Quepem MLA Alton Dcosta was also present.

“It looks like the Goa government has ventured into brokerage and hence leasing out land to private universities to garner ‘bags’. We have seen how this government has done deals in the case of Zuari Agro Chemicals. It is a scam worth crores of rupees. Same formula they are now applying everywhere,” Alemao said.

“I have learnt that thousands of square meters of land belonging to the Captain of Ports at Britona is leased out to one Ganpat university from Gujarat. Recently people from Thivim protested against the private university coming to their village, which has sought 2 lakh square meter land. Government is giving away our land to these universities, which will not benefit the locals,” he said.

“In future these universities will sell this land to someone else, using the formula of Zuari Agro Chemicals, and there will be no land available for people of Goa,”Alemao pointed out.

“Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has stated that inviting private universities will help to create an educational hub, but his government has failed to maintain the ranking of Goa University,” he said.

“Institutions like National Institute of Technology (NIT) have deprived locals from jobs and have recruited candidates from other states,” he lamented.

He said that IIT faced opposition at Shell Melauli, Canacona and Sanguem because of destruction of environment which will take place after they are allotted 10 lakh square meter land.

“Such projects threaten our environment, infrastructure and heritage. They will also put a strain on the village infrastructure including sewage system, waste management, availability of water and electricity,” he said.

Alemao said that the incapable BJP government has failed in all aspects and its priorities are only to make money from corruption.

Alton DCosta said that Parul University, which is establishing in Nakeri-Betul, has started work by sidelining the local body. “We had asked that they should give contracts to locals, fifty percent concession to students, and jobs to our local youths. But if we see their attitude, it feels that they will not fulfil the demands of locals,” he said.

He also said that this project has constructed a ready mix concrete unit without taking permission and disallowing the local body to inspect it.
