Goa, September 2024 – Manipal Hospital Goa has successfully completed highly complex Modified Bentall’s Surgery on a 40-year-old hypertensive patient suffering from an acute aortic dissection. The surgery, performed on an emergency basis, was the second Bentall’s surgery successfully conducted at the hospital with a positive outcome.

Acute aortic dissection is a life-threatening cardiac emergency where blood enters the layers of the aorta through an intimal tear, creating a false lumen. In this particular case, the dissection involved the aortic root, ascending aorta, arch vessels (which supply blood to the brain and upper body), as well as the iliac and renal arteries. The patient’s condition was further complicated by the involvement of the aortic valve and the right coronary artery, necessitating immediate surgical intervention.

The surgical team, led by Dr. Rakesh Deshmane, Consultant Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon (CVTS), and Dr. Shrirang Ranade, Consultant CVTS, performed a Modified Bentall’s Procedure. This involved replacing the aortic root and ascending aorta with a valve conduit graft, and repairing the arch vessels under Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest (DHCA), during which the patient’s blood circulation was stopped for 40 minutes after being cooled to ensure cerebral protection.

Dr. Divya Mahaldar, Consultant Cardiac Anaesthetist, along with a skilled team, including Perfusionist Mrs. Gauri Panche, OT Nurse Mr. Dipak P.A., and nurses Santoshi and Blessy, provided critical support during the procedure. Their collective expertise ensured that the patient was discharged without any complications and has now returned to his regular duties.

Commenting on the successful outcome, Dr. Rakesh Deshmane stated, “Acute aortic dissection is a highly challenging cardiac emergency that requires immediate action. This particular case involved multiple vital arteries and posed significant risks. Our team’s coordinated efforts and access to advanced technologies allowed us to save the patient’s life and ensure a smooth recovery. We are proud to be able to offer this level of specialized cardiac care at Manipal Hospital Goa.”

This is the second Bentall’s surgery performed at Manipal Hospital Goa, further establishing the hospital as a premier destination for advanced cardiac surgeries and emergency care.
