•GUJ STAGES PROTEST AGAINST LAYOFFS ON 100TH DEATH ANNIVERSARY OF LOKMANYA TILAK•
The Goa Union of Journalists (GUJ) held a protest to voice its concern over the recent spurt of layoffs in several Goa-based media houses owing to the coronavirus pandemic.
The protest was part of the 100th death anniversary of Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, the father of fearless journalism in India, held at the Azad Maidan in Panaji on Saturday.
While addressing a gathering of around 25 journalists, GUJ President Rajtilak Naik highlighted the difficult times the fraternity is going through.
“This is a tough phase for the media. There are layoffs, organisations are even shutting down and those who have survived have had to face massive salary deduction. Around 75 mediapersons have already lost their jobs in Goa,” said Rajtilak.

GUJ said instead of blaming media houses, who are currently facing loss of revenue due to the pandemic, journalists should start looking at other business opportunities. GUJ will help all affected journalists avail of subsidised business loans through government agencies.
Affected journalists who are keen on starting their own businesses can approach the GUJ Executive Committee.
GUJ treasurer Kailas Naik welcomed the gathering while General Secretary, Vasudev Pagi proposed the vote of thanks.
