Panaji: The Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao on Tuesday slammed BJP government for borrowing more Rs 300 crore and stated that Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has failed to stop loan dependency.

“On many occasions Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has stated that he has plans to generate revenue. He even promised this on the floor of the house. But he has failed to keep his word and has kept on borrowing loans,” Cuncolim MLA Yuri Alemao said.

“The way the government is going ahead in the financial area, it is condemnable because it is not concerned about the fiscal health and the future of the state. Chief Minister Pramod Sawant is diverting minds from state’s financial ailment by stating that he has plans to generate revenue, actually it is a tactic to hoodwink people,” Alemao alleged.

“New borrowing proves that Pramod Sawant has no plans to generate revenue and stop loan dependency. Goa is reeling under Rs 27489 crores debt. Sawant had said that he has done planning and financial management that after 2 years the state will not require to take loans. But in reality he doesn’t have any plans to make Goa ‘SwayamPurna’ in revenue and make a stronger exchequer,” Alemao said.

Alemao said that total debt of the state for financial year 2019-20 was Rs 16894 crore, 2020-21 Rs 20729 crores, 2021-22 Rs 23271 crores and 2022-23 Rs 24619 crore.

According to Alemao, the government fails to release the financial aid of social welfare schemes beneficiaries, which is because of a dearth of funds in coffers. “Cash strapped BJP government has spent more than Rs 600 crore on unwanted events. It has failed to take austerity measures and also to generate revenue. Now the government should be serious and take measures to keep the good health of its financial position,” Alemao said.
