PANAJI: On Wednesday, Aldona Congress MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira urged the government to address the rampant issue of land filling, which he stated was causing widespread water logging and flooding in the constituencies of Bardez. Despite numerous complaints, government authorities have failed to take effective action.
During a calling attention motion, Adv Ferreira highlighted that land filling is being carried out extensively, and district authorities are not taking adequate measures. “Land filling is being done rampantly. The mamlatdar and the talathi issue notices and may at most fine the violators, but they do not remove the illegal fill,” Adv Ferreira said. “Removal is crucial for water to flow properly.”
He also pointed out the filling of fields in Guirim around a petrol pump, where a government sewerage project is planned. “A sewerage project is being built in the field. If the government itself fills up fields, what can we expect from the common man?” he questioned.
Adv Ferreira further addressed the issue of flooding in Guirim, noting that improper desilting and blocked cross drains are exacerbating the problem. “Flooding is occurring, and the tar bridge is affected because proper desilting hasn’t been done. People block cross drains to prevent water from entering their property. I spoke to the Collector, who assured me that these drains will be opened under disaster management if a formal request is made,” he said.
He also criticized the revenue department for granting conversion sanads without ensuring proper conditions and the TCP department for permitting compound walls that block water flow, leading to water accumulation in others’ properties.
Additionally, he raised concerns about uprooted trees and water logging in the villages of Aldona, Carona, Corjuem, and Bastora, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address these issues.
